The only criticism of it was that it was too short !! Cate who delivered the course was fantastic, what an inspiration. All staff should have the opportunity to attend these courses. Isobel - Jobcentre Plus

"I have worked in the world of personal development since 1991. I motivate people for a living so I know what it takes inside to change. It was not until September 06 and experiencing GOALS training in London that made a huge change to my life. Something awoke inside me! I have lost 5 stone in 6 months and I am not procrastinating anymore with my ambitions. GOALS’ training has helped me maximise my potential"Susan Martin - Prince’s Trust - Scotland

"On my GOALS course last week, one of the clients was so motivated that they got a job offer before the course ended, another went straight out the next day and got a job!" Lesley Quintana at Papworth Trust.

Shaw Trust has been using GOALS since 2003 and it is making a significant difference.  “People who take part come away with a ‘get up and go spirit’ as well as the self-sufficiency and practical abilities that make it more likely to find a job, training or build a better life for themselves,” says Sue Rozelaar, Shaw Trust’s Regional Employment Manager for London.

One woman who believes the programme helped change her life is Tracy from Stratford, East London who tells Connect her story.  "Receiving a phone call offering me a new job, possibly a career; you could say that was good news - for me it was a small miracle. About a week after I had registered with Shaw Trust, I attended one of their GOALS courses and just assumed it was the next step. My first impression of the meeting and the other people in the group was, “what a bunch of losers”. Some people had lost confidence, lost loved ones to cancer and me; I had lost my old self in an accident at work, I had lost the full use of my right arm. The GOALS course opened my eyes to the fact that I had to help myself, to stop worrying about other people’s reactions and prejudice. I had no problem with going swimming and only using one arm, I still got from one end of the pool to the other, yet when I was at an interview I felt inadequate, vulnerable and inferior. GOALS basically took me by the hand and shook me into reality. It said clearly “you can do what you want, have faith in yourself”. So I looked positively at my past, my qualifications and work experience. I started to apply for jobs that I always wanted to do, always said I would do but never applied for because it didn’t fit in with the family, the kids, or it was far away. All the excuses we use to protect us from rejection. The thing was, before GOALS, I was applying for jobs that were beneath my abilities thinking “oh, I must get this”. I could do the job tasks with no problem, yet I was being rejected. I was telling myself, “why not apply for what I really want to do, if I get rejected does it matter?” But at the same time, thinking, “what if I really want it badly, that I get an interview, or am even offered the job….” GOALS makes you think. It opens up your book; it makes you believe in you. It’s not a diploma, rocket science or an academic class. It just makes you realise that you are the selling point, that you can achieve what ever you want if you put in time, effort and of course your mind to it. Since my last job, I have increased my salary from £12,400 to £23,000. I have been able to clear my debts and am helping my daughter through college and university without putting a financial strain on my husband and family. But most importantly, I have realised and rediscovered ME. The girl who struggled to get qualifications while working her way through ‘A’ levels, who wanted to get out of the council estate where I hated to live. The girl, who with all her heart, wanted to be a nurse, wanted a house, wanted to get married, wanted children, wanted a new car, wanted a career, wanted to make a difference at work, wanted to retire to the county and live happily ever after. I can’t tell you if this will happen to you, but with positive thinking and believing in myself, I now believe that I will succeed. I am already half way there. That is what GOALS is all about.

Trainers/Facilitators

"Job outcomes have doubled since we introduced GOALS to our Gateway to Work courses. GOALS teaches people what they REALLY need to know to get into employment and the impact is fantastic. Our trainees come back and see us when they’ve got a job, they’re buzzing and still talking about what they learned on the GOALS course” Trevor Rooms, Kennedy Scott Bedford/Luton

"I am very pleased with GOALS. I saw a real change in everyone's outlook who went on the first workshop. In fact 3 out of the 8 that I sent along were offered jobs the first week"! Rachel Coulson, New Deal Personal Employment Advisor Bermondsey

"I would like to say how interesting and exciting I found this programme. Having done self development work before, I found the information very academic and difficult to translate into reality. GOALS has been a real help - really inspirational"! Olivia Sixsmith NACRO

"All prison Officers should take this course as part of their standard training"! Frank PRISON OFFICER

"I have found that when people come together in a group to discuss their own barriers to employment, suddenly they realize that there are other people in similar situations. People then are able to step outside of themselves and open up and share their own experiences, offering support, encouragement and guidance to those in a group. Suddenly people feel responsible for the well-being and success of others. They realize that they can make a difference. Positivity is catching and extremely empowering. When people are empowered then they can overcome their own barriers to employment". Lynne Tapper Shaw Trust

"I do see the change, I see them switch gears – this is what I need to do and how to do it. It works! I feel the material is sound, the workbook, facilitators manual. It’s idiot proof and so thorough. It is very good". Paul Dubois. Reed New Deal

"We have done all kinds of things but they do not have the same results as GOALS. I’m not trying to flatter you but I have not seen anything available that gives people the same impetus". Francis Harry Inner City Estates Ltd trainer (Brixton)

Participant Feedback

Goals has helped me identify the negative cycle I had fallen into and to break it.
Having been in long-term unemployment I had lost sight of what I wanted and my self esteem had hit rock bottom. I learned GOALS techniques to break my bad habits and re-assess my self-worth and objectives and my CV reflects the changes in me.
I am now positive, know what I want and am well on my way to get it. Thank you for making me realise my potential once again.
Emmanuelle – GOALS Gateway client

"Just thought I would let you know that after your session I encouraged my husband Don to send some spec letters. PC World received his letter last Friday, he was interviewed Saturday and starts as a Network Technician for them in Gateshead on Monday !!! Thank you so much for your advice and please feel free to use this as an example when advising other people of the benefits of spec letters !!  Andrea

"The first thing we learnt about was self-esteem and responsibility – the bit about E+R=O clicked inside my head. I’ve never really thought about it before. Out of all the years I have done at school I didn’t learn as much as I got out of yesterday. I took a good look at my life. It made me think about it all night – what I have to do". Martin

"You have to believe in yourself before anybody else can, and it taught me to have a more positive attitude". (Ciara)

"I feel a lot better now I've done this course, I am determined now to get the job I want. I am going to succeed in what I want. Thank you for the help". (Caron)
