GOALS and the Homeless Sector

OSW have fully integrated the GOALS two-day motivational course within its services to hard-to-reach homeless and disadvantaged people. Employment outcomes amongst the GOALS programme participants are exceptional – currently 54% of GOALS programme participants have achieved their goal of employment and a further 10% are participating in volunteering activity.

It was like turning on a light….” commented a recent participant. Combining such training with personalised follow-up coaching, advice and guidance enables people to maintain their momentum and move on in their lives.

Transitional Spaces Project – Off the Streets and into Work

GOALS can be used at various crossroads on a person's journey to set short- and long-term goals around housing, independent living, relationships, volunteering, training, education, work or other meaningful activities.

We recognise that homeless individuals, as with other client groups that we work with, have multiple barriers to overcome, including relationship breakdowns, generational learned behaviour, experience of being in care, the armed forces or prison, addictions, mental and physical illnesses, which may have added to their impaired sense of self, self-esteem, confidence and direction in life.

We support the creation of hostels as 'places of change' and see ourselves playing an important role in this development, in terms of empowering service users to fully engage in the range of services on offer and increasing personal responsibility around such change.

What is GOALS?

The GOALS programme 2-day high impact course that creates motivation and momentum. Customers are empowered to overcome limiting perceptions of self that inhibit independent living, by boosting confidence and self-esteem. Our programmes have an underlying theme - to teach and enable others to build independence, self-esteem, inner strength, personal responsibility, self-motivation and purposefulness - ultimately, to help people get the life that they want.

The programme gives participants the desire to take up other services and opportunities, such as learning, volunteering and other activities, at the same time as formulating a plan to help them to establish a firm foundation for a sustainable future career path. The programme works to generate aspirations, raise expectations and improve one's approach to work, which makes disaffected people more amenable to employers.  It offers conceptual frameworks and practical tools for individuals to manage their personal and career development. It does this through a series of exercises, which compel people to take stock and to take action to move their lives forward. Following the GOALS course, customers are given a 30-day action plan with follow-up support.
